Bharathi Park

Bharathi Park is at the historic centre of the French Precinct of Pondicherry’s Boulevard Town and was traditionally known as: Place du Gouvernement . Until the 1940s the Park was used as a parade ground. In 2006 the park was renovated into a public recreation park with pedestrians and surrounded t with a fence and four iron gates between ornate masonry pillars in four directions forming entrances to the park.

The park is situated in Boulevard Town surrounded by different land marks as the Raj Nivas, Legislative Assembly, etc.

In the parks’ centre, is situated the spectacular city symbol- the Ayi Mandapam monument

The Ayi Mandapam was constructed during the time of the Second French Empire to facilitate a water fountain. The structure was, built by Louis Guerre in 1854.

According to local legend, water was supplied to the town (1862) through a canal, from a tank that was built at Muttirapalaiyam by Ayi (a courtesan during the reign of Krishnadevaraya). The Mandapam is believed to have been sanctioned by Napoleon III to commemorate her efforts.
